Professor Nishimura is Admitted as a Member of the Japan Academy
(Nippon Gakushi-in)

During the 1064th general meeting of the Japan Academy on December 12, 2012, Professor of the Economic Research Institute of Kyoto University, Kazuo Nishimura, was elected as a member of the Japan Academy (Nippon Gakushi-in). The primary objective of the Japan Academy is to afford highly distinguished scientists privileged treatment and to carry out activities required to contribute to scientific and academic progress.

According to the Japan Academy’s website on election of new members of the Japan Academy, Professor Nishimura was elected because:
“Professor Kazuo Nishimura is a global leader in complexity economics. He is a pioneer of research on business cycles and economic fluctuations. He proposed that business cycles are a consequence of rational economic activities utilizing a unique mathematical approach, and his work is highly evaluated as the initiative that established the endogenous business cycle theory within the framework of modern economics. His work has realized economic analysis based on complexity theory. Since this landmark achievement, Professor Nishimura has continued to refine the endogenous business cycle theory by applying the chaos theory. He has also provided a modern interpretation to the “animal spirits” theory advocated by Keynes”.
Professor Nishimura continues to broaden the horizon of modern macroeconomics and to have profound influences on today’s development in economics.

Professor Kazuo Nishimura Receives Medal with Purple Ribbon

On November 2nd, 2012, the Medal of Honor winners were announced. Professor of the Economic Research Institute of Kyoto University, Kazuo Nishimura, was awarded the Medal with Purple Ribbon, which acknowledges great achievements in the fields of art and sciences.

Introduction of “Complexity” into Economics
Professor Kazuo Nishimura is the world-renowned authority of the nonlinear macroeconomic dynamics. His pioneering work, which introduced the idea of “complexity” into economics, is highly regarded. Although he is elated that his efforts, which began in graduate school, are being recognized, his research still continues. He aspires to continue his research activities with the goal of “adding a new dimension to economics while treasuring the past achievements in this field.”
In 2005, he founded the International Journal of Economic Theory, which is the first international journal in the field of economics published in Japan. He still sits on the editorial board. Each year, the journal awards an “IJET Mackenzie prize.” This year marks the 8th anniversary, and the prize went to a Japanese national for the second time since its inception. Professor Nishimura says, “I earnestly hope that the younger generation in Japan works hard so that they can make significant contributions to the world. I am satisfied knowing that my activities, including the publication of IJET, may inspire the next generation.”

Dr. Takamitsu Sawa, president of Shiga University and a member of the selection committee remarked, “Professor Nishimura is indeed a leading figure in mathematical economics. He is one of pioneers of the filed who introduced nonlinear model and clarified what are behind the seemingly-complicated economic phenomena. His contribution and achievements are very prominent.”
